GRAVESEND, NEW YORK --- In a town with the name Gravesend, it's no surprise that a true ghost story would surface. A retired nurse from Gravesend, New York who is sharing her paranormal experiences on the SyFy television show, Paranormal Witness.

Elaine Marcado, a 64-year-old retired nurse, says she has shared her house with ghosts for the past 22 years. "Ghosts have been terrorizing my family for years." said Elaine Marcado.

The quaint Queen Anne house, located on 9th Street in Gravesend, looks like a peaceful suburban New York home, but the stories inside Elaine Marcado's haunted house, suggest that there are spirits inhabiting the house, and they're not resting peacefully.

The retired emergency room nurse from Coney Island Hospital first moved into the house in 1982 with her two young daughters and her first husband, and Elaine immediately felt like she was being watched, but there was never anyone else in the room.

"There have been so many things that have happened in the house that you just can't explain, and many times I have been left crying." said Elaine Marcado. While she was sleeping, Elaine would awaken to a creepy feeling, and soon after she felt like a ghost was pressing down on her chest and stomach.

When the haunted happenings started affecting her children, including her daughter seeing a man sitting at the top of the stairs disappear into thin air, Elaine Marcado finally made a call for help. She contacted a psychic medium, and she also sought help from Hans Holzer, a paranormal psychologist.

Elaine Marcado said the psychic medium told her that there are several spirits in the house, including the ghost of a bride, who mysteriously died in the attic. But after seeking the help of Hans Holzer and other paranormal professionals, the ghostly activity in the house didn't stop, and Elaine Marcado put her haunted house on the market.

Upon selling the home, Elaine Marcado told the new owners that the house is haunted, and even gave them a copy of the book she wrote about her paranormal experiences in the home, but the new homeowners still move forward with the purchase.

The new owners of the haunted house on 9th Street say they still have not seen any ghosts, nor have they experienced any paranormal activity in the home. "After we moved in, I remember hearing a bunch of footsteps upstairs and getting scared, but then I remembered I had four kids in the house,” said the current homeowner, who declined to give her name. “We renovated the house after moving in, and that must have made the ghosts leave.”

Elaine said she understands some people might find her ghost story hard to believe, but what she experienced in the house was terrifying, and is absolutely true.“If someone were telling me these stories without having experienced what I’ve experienced, I’d probably say the same thing,” said Mercado. “It’s okay if you don’t believe.”  To this day, Elaine Mercado sometimes drives by the 9th Street house, and she wonders if the ghosts that scared her out still exist..

J.S.W.

What a strong name! No wonder you are not afraid. My two cents on why some of us can see spirit is that we have many undiscovered parts of our brains. Some of us are wired differently. Through genetics, and or enviornmental, and or nature. Mine happens to be genetic, enviornment ,and nature. The genetic is obvious, dieing and coming back to life is due to my enviornment at one time, and nature for me it was Mt. St. Helens ect...

Why do some of us see a ghost? I read that science thinks maybe the human ability to see in color may be as new as 2,000 years because some ancient Greek writings describe looking at things with no refrences made to their color.

Elderly townsfolk here warned me not to buy my house because it was "Haunted"! My thinking about such things was very limited and uniformed 25 years ago, I had almost no opinion... then highly coincidental things began happening, then I heard and saw things happen , all normal and explainable as a friend or relative just entering my house.. until just a pair of black jeans walked into the room-no upper body-no feet, took two steps and vanished!

I had heard the south door open (it has a closer on it it does not blow open in any wind) I heard footsteps coming across the adjacent room (Hardwood floor), headed my way, I saw and heard the door between the rooms open (it used to drag abit) looking through the sheer curtain hanging from the ceiling at the edge of the door) I saw the silouette of someone entering the room, then just two steps made by a pair of black jeans! All of this happened by the light of the television set as I had been" playing" , putting video tapes in the machine, it was Winter , about 10:30 at night . I was left much more curious than scared.

Sometimes it depends on who is living in the house. I believe some of us have differently "wired" brains if you will, just enough to perceive a different frequency, of light or sound ect. We know it's a fact animals can smell things that do exist but that we cann't smell ourselves. We also know for a fact that animals can hear sounds and frequencies that our ears/brains cannot, yet they exist. Animals can also see when we humans cannot. I suspect that ghosts exist in a different frequency/frequencies in light, sound, ect. (that we cannot perceive) than we do while alive. This is would explain why many folks only catch glimpses or stray sounds of ghosts only rarely. I would not be suprised to learn someday that ghosts are literally everywhere all around us, as I believe they are.

Comment by Tina on August 16, 2012 at 10:23am I am a believer. I have lived through this as well starting from age 3 or 4 years. My sister and I also grew up in a haunted house. Comment by Angel Ann Dozier on August 16, 2012 at 2:23am

Just watched this show this evening. Awesome show! I also watched Haunted Collector and was happy to see what was done with the Ouiga board. Smacking myself in the forehead! Salt to bind it,

I have read and thoroughly enjoyed Elaine Mercado's book and her experiences ring very true. I too have experienced the weight of an invisible "someone" lying on top of me, so can relate to this horrific experience. It was made all the more terrifying by my light turning itself on and off at the time, and my bedroom door being slammed shut of its own accord. At other times, my cupboard doors would fling open by themselves, and random objects would be flung out (usually projectiles directed at me!)

I believe ghosts are real too, and I think that ALL houses are haunted, whether people believe ghosts are real or not is another story. I have lived in a haunted house before and experienced paranormal activity first hand..... from hearing their voices on some of our home videos, to seeing someone walk by at the corner of my eye when either nobody was home or everyone eas asleep, and even experienced poltergeist activity in our kitchen with the cabinets opening and shutting and stuff being thrown around. It can be a scary situation when you live in a haunted hose and I don't wish harm on anyone, but I do wish that everyone, especially skeptics, can experience paranormal activity themselves, and then let them deny that ghosts are real.

love the paranormal witness show and this looks like its going to be a scary episode. I think that there's something about people acknowledging that people might think they're crazy, or not believe them, sort of adds validity to their story, so I believe Elaine, and I know that ghosts are real, and houses are haunted.
