PHILADELPHIA, PA --- Hundreds of paranormal investigation teams have been sprouting around the United States this year, but very few of these ghost hunters have police officers on their team, or have an entire paranormal investigation team of police officers.

Olde City Paranormal is a paranormal team co-founded by a police officer and a tattoo artist, and the ghost hunting team has become a small police force dedicated to investigating the paranormal.

Philadelphia Police Officer, John Levy, founded the paranormal team in 2009 with Steve Rotondi, and Olde City Paranormal grew their ghost hunting team with Philadelphia Police Officer Amanda Levy, who is John Levy's wife, and also Police Officer George Feinstein, an officer assigned to the city's Mayor detail.

Officer John Levy said he became interested in the paranormal from watching television shows such as Ghost Hunters and Ghost Adventures, but it wasn't until he had a firsthand paranormal experience that he decided to investigate the paranormal himself.

John Levy stopped by his mother's empty house while on patrol one night to use the restroom, when he says out of the corner of his eye he saw a figure walk into a bedroom where his grandfather used to sleep. "It was my grandfather, but he has been dead since 1988," Levy said. "There was no doubt in my mind it was him - his height, his walk, his stature - it was him."

This is when police officer John Levy founded Olde City Paranormal with tattoo artist Steve Rotondi and his wife and colleagues from the Philadelphia Police Department, and since, the ghost hunting police officers have been investigating dozens of haunted places and claims of paranormal activity all over Pennsylvania.

Olde City Paranormal isn't the first team of ghost hunting police officers... In Chicago, police officer Rob Fabiani founded his police force of ghost hunters, which led to a paranormal series on the A&E Network called Paranormal Cops. Although the television show Paranormal Cops wasn't a success like Ghost Hunters and Ghost Adventures, Rob Fabiani and his team of ghost hunting police officers continue to investigate haunted places in Chicago.

Officer John Levy said "there isn't anything special about police officers investigating the paranormal", but Officer Rob Fabiani disagreed, saying "Being police officers, it raises the bar. If I was a plumber I could lie through my teeth and go back to work tomorrow. As policemen, we don't have the luxury of being reckless. We're held accountable for what we say." Perhaps Rob Fabiani's statement was a dig at Ghost Hunters stars Jason Hawes and Grant Wilson?

A few well known haunted places in Philadelphia include the Eastern State Penitentiary... the Library Hall, on 5th Street, which is said to be haunted by the ghost of Benjamin Franklin, and the Philadelphia Zoo, the oldest zoo in America, is said to have two haunted buildings, the Solitude House and Penrose Building.

I have personally investigated with this team and they have my utmost respect..they bring something to the table that a lot of teams out there may have lost while doing investigations...common sense ..they don't jump at every little thing they hear. or see ..they look for rational explanations and when they can't find one they get others to look at it and if they can't come up with something ..then it's paranormal...

Comment by Ed Tieman on November 27, 2012 at 10:50am

Does it raise the bar I feel in a way it does, but still as I wrote before people are people no matter their occupation.  Though they do have experience in their own way of investigations, because of their occupation.

I'm with Carl and everyone else who said they miss Paranormal Cops. I loved that show! They seemed more like true investigators. I sort of like Zak and crew for cheeky factor, but Paranormal Cops felt more real. Like watching paranormal detectives at work.

Cop on the team or not, credible would be, for me, a specter in full view of the camera, answering questions clearly and intelligently before disappearing completely, and the footage cannot be debunked as the whole team can vouch for it and the evidence can only speak volumes.

Comment by Just*Plain*Robbin on November 15, 2012 at 7:13pm

I think they should bring Paranormal Cops back to TV and add the Philly team and perhaps others from different cities as well.  Kind of a "First 48" of ghost hunting.

Comment by Steve Abrams on November 15, 2012 at 9:22am

Hmm.. Was the "Perhaps Rob Fabiani's statement was a dig at Ghost Hunters stars Jason Hawes and Grant Wilson?" a comment from Fabiani or from the writer of the story. Also the author can't get his names straight. It's Ron, not Rob, Fabiani.

Heather, so by your statement you have to have a successful TV program in order to be credible? The funny thing is I consider Grant to be credible. Is that why he left the "reborn" Ghost Hunters? It wasn't that long ago that GH just about debunked everything. Now they are finding paranormal activity just about around every corner. Maybe Jason will get possessed on a investigation. Kinda like the other popular ghost hunting program.

Love Paranormal mentions police corruption. Yes, it happens and all police officers suffer BECAUSE THEY ARE held to a higher standard. Now if people would hold politicians to the same standards instead of electing the same corrupt people all the time. Oh well, that's a different rant.

Depending on how an investigation is run, I would fine a police officer slightly more credible than other people. Now if the officer was a detective I would probably think it was even more credible.

Comment by Ed Tieman on November 15, 2012 at 9:10am

Does being a Cop give creditbility in what they find?  Or is it one of those Dime a Dozen groups and in it for the Glory of saying, I AM A GHOST HUNTER.  I am a Cop put us on TV so we can make money that way.  Only they know who they are.

GRAVESEND, NEW YORK --- In a town with the name Gravesend, it's no surprise that a true ghost story would surface. A retired nurse from Gravesend, New York who is sharing her paranormal experiences on the SyFy television show, Paranormal Witness.

Elaine Marcado, a 64-year-old retired nurse, says she has shared her house with ghosts for the past 22 years. "Ghosts have been terrorizing my family for years." said Elaine Marcado.

The quaint Queen Anne house, located on 9th Street in Gravesend, looks like a peaceful suburban New York home, but the stories inside Elaine Marcado's haunted house, suggest that there are spirits inhabiting the house, and they're not resting peacefully.

The retired emergency room nurse from Coney Island Hospital first moved into the house in 1982 with her two young daughters and her first husband, and Elaine immediately felt like she was being watched, but there was never anyone else in the room.

"There have been so many things that have happened in the house that you just can't explain, and many times I have been left crying." said Elaine Marcado. While she was sleeping, Elaine would awaken to a creepy feeling, and soon after she felt like a ghost was pressing down on her chest and stomach.

When the haunted happenings started affecting her children, including her daughter seeing a man sitting at the top of the stairs disappear into thin air, Elaine Marcado finally made a call for help. She contacted a psychic medium, and she also sought help from Hans Holzer, a paranormal psychologist.

Elaine Marcado said the psychic medium told her that there are several spirits in the house, including the ghost of a bride, who mysteriously died in the attic. But after seeking the help of Hans Holzer and other paranormal professionals, the ghostly activity in the house didn't stop, and Elaine Marcado put her haunted house on the market.

Upon selling the home, Elaine Marcado told the new owners that the house is haunted, and even gave them a copy of the book she wrote about her paranormal experiences in the home, but the new homeowners still move forward with the purchase.

The new owners of the haunted house on 9th Street say they still have not seen any ghosts, nor have they experienced any paranormal activity in the home. "After we moved in, I remember hearing a bunch of footsteps upstairs and getting scared, but then I remembered I had four kids in the house,” said the current homeowner, who declined to give her name. “We renovated the house after moving in, and that must have made the ghosts leave.”

Elaine said she understands some people might find her ghost story hard to believe, but what she experienced in the house was terrifying, and is absolutely true.“If someone were telling me these stories without having experienced what I’ve experienced, I’d probably say the same thing,” said Mercado. “It’s okay if you don’t believe.”  To this day, Elaine Mercado sometimes drives by the 9th Street house, and she wonders if the ghosts that scared her out still exist..

J.S.W.

What a strong name! No wonder you are not afraid. My two cents on why some of us can see spirit is that we have many undiscovered parts of our brains. Some of us are wired differently. Through genetics, and or enviornmental, and or nature. Mine happens to be genetic, enviornment ,and nature. The genetic is obvious, dieing and coming back to life is due to my enviornment at one time, and nature for me it was Mt. St. Helens ect...

Comment by James spencer Warfield on August 18, 2012 at 12:44pm

Why do some of us see a ghost? I read that science thinks maybe the human ability to see in color may be as new as 2,000 years because some ancient Greek writings describe looking at things with no refrences made to their color.

Elderly townsfolk here warned me not to buy my house because it was "Haunted"! My thinking about such things was very limited and uniformed 25 years ago, I had almost no opinion... then highly coincidental things began happening, then I heard and saw things happen , all normal and explainable as a friend or relative just entering my house.. until just a pair of black jeans walked into the room-no upper body-no feet, took two steps and vanished!

I had heard the south door open (it has a closer on it it does not blow open in any wind) I heard footsteps coming across the adjacent room (Hardwood floor), headed my way, I saw and heard the door between the rooms open (it used to drag abit) looking through the sheer curtain hanging from the ceiling at the edge of the door) I saw the silouette of someone entering the room, then just two steps made by a pair of black jeans! All of this happened by the light of the television set as I had been" playing" , putting video tapes in the machine, it was Winter , about 10:30 at night . I was left much more curious than scared.

Comment by David McConnaughey on August 17, 2012 at 4:07pm

Sometimes it depends on who is living in the house. I believe some of us have differently "wired" brains if you will, just enough to perceive a different frequency, of light or sound ect. We know it's a fact animals can smell things that do exist but that we cann't smell ourselves. We also know for a fact that animals can hear sounds and frequencies that our ears/brains cannot, yet they exist. Animals can also see when we humans cannot. I suspect that ghosts exist in a different frequency/frequencies in light, sound, ect. (that we cannot perceive) than we do while alive. This is would explain why many folks only catch glimpses or stray sounds of ghosts only rarely. I would not be suprised to learn someday that ghosts are literally everywhere all around us, as I believe they are.

Comment by Tina on August 16, 2012 at 10:23am I am a believer. I have lived through this as well starting from age 3 or 4 years. My sister and I also grew up in a haunted house. Comment by Angel Ann Dozier on August 16, 2012 at 2:23am

Just watched this show this evening. Awesome show! I also watched Haunted Collector and was happy to see what was done with the Ouiga board. Smacking myself in the forehead! Salt to bind it,

Comment by Barbara on August 15, 2012 at 11:55pm

I have read and thoroughly enjoyed Elaine Mercado's book and her experiences ring very true. I too have experienced the weight of an invisible "someone" lying on top of me, so can relate to this horrific experience. It was made all the more terrifying by my light turning itself on and off at the time, and my bedroom door being slammed shut of its own accord. At other times, my cupboard doors would fling open by themselves, and random objects would be flung out (usually projectiles directed at me!)

Comment by Heather Barros on August 15, 2012 at 11:05pm

cool ghost story!!! i cant wait to watch this paranormal witness episode.

Comment by Love Paranormal on August 15, 2012 at 11:01pm

I believe ghosts are real too, and I think that ALL houses are haunted, whether people believe ghosts are real or not is another story. I have lived in a haunted house before and experienced paranormal activity first hand..... from hearing their voices on some of our home videos, to seeing someone walk by at the corner of my eye when either nobody was home or everyone eas asleep, and even experienced poltergeist activity in our kitchen with the cabinets opening and shutting and stuff being thrown around. It can be a scary situation when you live in a haunted hose and I don't wish harm on anyone, but I do wish that everyone, especially skeptics, can experience paranormal activity themselves, and then let them deny that ghosts are real.

Comment by Rachel Lundenberg on August 15, 2012 at 10:55pm

love the paranormal witness show and this looks like its going to be a scary episode. I think that there's something about people acknowledging that people might think they're crazy, or not believe them, sort of adds validity to their story, so I believe Elaine, and I know that ghosts are real, and houses are haunted.

Ohio University Wants To Demolish Haunted Building

Ohio University Schedules Demolition of Building That's Believed To Be Haunted.. Students and Preservationists Hope To Persuade Them Not To Demolish The Building... Haunted Society Paranormal News - Subscribe To Our News Feed Here

ATHENS, OHIO --- The Ohio University has announced their plans to demolish a historical building, that's said to be haunted, before this coming Halloween... but many students and historical preservationists are objecting to the University's demolition plans.

The Ridges Building 26 was once used as the Beacon School, but the 88-year-old historical building was originally built to serve as a tuberculosis ward at the state mental hospital that once owned the property, which was acquired by Ohio University in the 1980's.

Officials at Ohio University said they're hoping to demolish Ridges Building 26 before Halloween to prevent curious students and ghost hunters from trespassing and causing more vandalism to the building. "Ridges Building 26 has become an attractive nuisance" said Harry Wyatt, associate vice president for facilities.

Harry Wyatt said he's not happy about demolishing a historical building, but in its state of disrepair he's concerned for people's safety. "When trespassers break in they're putting themselves in danger" Harry Wyatt said, he continued "This is a part of my job that I hate, but personally and professionally, I’m convinced that this is the right thing to do for this building, for safety reasons.”

The state of Ohio has promised Ohio University $300,000 for the demolition of Ridges Building 26, and this has the historical society furious, and they're wondering why the university isn't using this money to rehabilitate the building, rather than tearing it down. "The building has historical significance as part of a still-intact mental-health campus that dates to 1868" said Tom O’Grady, President of Athens County Historical Society. "The building is not falling down, It’s deteriorating around the edges.”

K. Robert Toy, a lawyer on the historical society’s board, questioned why, if Ohio University is concerned about trespassing, they recently removed a fence that had been posted with 'no trespassing' signs. “If it’s an attractive nuisance, it’s more of one now,” K. Robert Toy said.

Ohio University Campus Police told Haunted Society that they've arrested 55 people in the last few years for trespassing at the haunted Ridges 26 Building. Most or all of which were thrill seeking students and ghost hunters breaking in to investigate because of the local folklore and claims of paranormal activity.

The last public statement given to Haunted Society Paranormal News was issued by Ohio University spokeswoman Renea Morris, who said, “The goal is for the building to be demolished prior to Halloween, but no demolition date has been set at this time. The project is going through final plan review and standard institutional approvals prior to its initiation."

Students, preservationists and many people in the paranormal community are hoping that before Ohio University makes any final approvals for the demolition of the haunted Ridges Building 26, that they consider using the $300,000 toward rehabilitating the building and using it for a meaningful purpose. The office of the President of Ohio University can be contacted by Email Here if you would like to voice your opinion to the university, or you can comment below to share your thoughts. If you're not a member of Haunted Society Paranormal Network, we invite you to Join Here. Haunted Society is a trusted source of bizarre and paranormal news and a free paranormal social networking website.

MESSAGE TO OHIO UNIVERSITY

This has importance to the paranormal community for a couple reasons, for one, we like many preservationists, prefer to preserve history whenever possible, but also because this building was once the location where many people died from tuberculosis. Of course with the rumors of the building being haunted, many people will be attracted to it, but if the building is haunted, this means that there are spirits within the walls of this building of every person who died there.

Haunted Society asks that Ohio University reconsiders their plans to demolish Ridges Building 26, and use the $300,000 to rehab, or at least, improve upon securing the building to prevent trespassers and vandalism. If they should still move forward with the demolition of the building, we ask that before doing so, that Ohio University consults a paranormal professional for a spiritual cleansing, to release the spirits of anyone left behind, or that's attached, or stuck inside this building. Ohio University might find this to be bizarre or unimportant to consider, but if you would consider this and need assistance getting someone for a spiritual cleansing, PLEASE CONTACT US HERE.

If they can't find a way to renovate it, maybe they could work with the public in some kind of way, and allow people to respectfully go thru one last time, and get pics etc, before demolition?

good article Phillip....good responses from all. As I said on my comment yesterday, let the rightful owners of this building decide what is best to do with it as I am sure they are listening to all sides. One person in the article said it is unsafe while another claimed that all that is needed is repairs around the edges....big differences there in opinion. Let the person who is qualified to make that assessment decide what is the best way to handle this. After that is done, and if and only if the building proves to be restorable (structurally and able to have asbestos removed and other potential hazards) they than can proceed as to the decision as to who should and could pay for the preservation and fundraising needed to do any project of this nature....such as a museum or other if that is decided to preserve the building. As a manager im sure that safety is the MOST IMPORTANT legal issue.....along with keeping unwelcomed visitors out. I am unsure as to the reason they removed a prior fence....the article doesnt say why. As to it being haunted.....no SURE proof has been offered in the article. Many unfortunate folks have died there...that is a fact....that alone does NOT make it haunted nor has any solid proof been offered in the article as to the presence of any trapped souls.. For me anyway, is best to stick mainly with the facts and less with speculation and raw emotions. I myself did not read anything in the article to suggest that anyone legally or otherwise associated with the Ridges Building 26, has or had any intentional or unintentional disrespect for those that passed on. All opinions are valued by all who are involved in this project. Good luck to all who are working hard there and listening to all public opinions which are as wide and varied as the opinions as to whether ghosts even exist..

Comment by Michelle on September 25, 2012 at 2:33pm U could not possibly understand where im going with this unless ur family members were there, i say members meaning more than one!!! I have been at the gravesites have u??? And for ur information i pay taxes....i do not sit on welfare and i would so much rather see my taxes going for the renovation of that building rather than some sorry butt who is to lazy to get a job!!! michelle,

I understand where you going with this, but family members have died in every hospital, restaurants, houses, etc.. across the nation..does that mean none should ever close down?  People go to grave sites to morn, not the places they died in.  I understand your intentions are good at heart, but when your a tax payer for long enough in your life, you understand when its important to cut the fat.

Comment by Michelle on September 24, 2012 at 8:54pm Family members have died at that hospital...they do not care one bit for the families of those patients!!!!!! Comment by Pete C on September 24, 2012 at 11:07am

I know everyone thinks its haunted, but lets be honest, for thoose of you who sign the petition... are you willing to pay for the upkeep?  As a tax payer, I sure as heck am not.

I don't think the building should be torn down but in order to prevent it being torn down maybe the students could save it by making it a "project" and the way they could raise the funds would be to visit a website that is helpful in doing just that. kickstarter.com     It is project site that many people use to showcase their ideas and projects and raise the needed money for those things!!! It just a suggestion if the Ohio students and residents want to save their building. Good luck!!

I'm sure that there are some funding somewhere and a lot of people would donate a little bit and that would help !!

What is wrong with taking out the Asbestos and the lead. People do it all the time for Historical building then they can reuse the building for school purposes. Without upseting all the groups. I mean its gonna cost 300,000 plus to demolish and drama for doing verus cleaning it up for ? amount of money(safely of course) and keeping people happy. Paranormal Investigations( dont like the words Ghost Hunting) aside, buildings were made for a reason and should be valued as such. They could always get a pysic in there and find out why spirit or entities are trapped and help them cross or at least help them cope and get along with the interactions of others( alive).

If a structural engineer finds the building unsafe then by all means I agree with tearing it down. Trespassing is illegal, no matter what someone is doing in the building. I am sure they are very concerned with legal issues if someone is stupid enough to break and enter and get hurt. Im surprised of the lack of any form of security cameras or alarm system to ward off would be ghost hunters and trespassers.  If mere cosmetic fixes are all that is needed is a shame to tear any historic building down. Perhaps it can be used as a museum of medical artifacts.  I am sure that the local medical comminity and student association would chip in for the renovations for the SOLE purpose of a medical museum....... Noone has given any proof thus far that the building is haunted....is just a rumor according to the article. No trapped souls have been proven to be there. Not everyone believes in ghosts or hauntings and are not expected nor forced to believe in such and getting any kind of "Ghost Hunting"permit in that college historic building may prove difficult. The poor souls that died in those unfortunate buildings deserve peace......not to be used for "fee" by anyone or told "We demand you show yourself" by the living. Good luck to them no matter what they decide to do with the historic building.
