GRAVESEND, NEW YORK --- In a town with the name Gravesend, it's no surprise that a true ghost story would surface. A retired nurse from Gravesend, New York who is sharing her paranormal experiences on the SyFy television show, Paranormal Witness.

Elaine Marcado, a 64-year-old retired nurse, says she has shared her house with ghosts for the past 22 years. "Ghosts have been terrorizing my family for years." said Elaine Marcado.

The quaint Queen Anne house, located on 9th Street in Gravesend, looks like a peaceful suburban New York home, but the stories inside Elaine Marcado's haunted house, suggest that there are spirits inhabiting the house, and they're not resting peacefully.

The retired emergency room nurse from Coney Island Hospital first moved into the house in 1982 with her two young daughters and her first husband, and Elaine immediately felt like she was being watched, but there was never anyone else in the room.

"There have been so many things that have happened in the house that you just can't explain, and many times I have been left crying." said Elaine Marcado. While she was sleeping, Elaine would awaken to a creepy feeling, and soon after she felt like a ghost was pressing down on her chest and stomach.

When the haunted happenings started affecting her children, including her daughter seeing a man sitting at the top of the stairs disappear into thin air, Elaine Marcado finally made a call for help. She contacted a psychic medium, and she also sought help from Hans Holzer, a paranormal psychologist.

Elaine Marcado said the psychic medium told her that there are several spirits in the house, including the ghost of a bride, who mysteriously died in the attic. But after seeking the help of Hans Holzer and other paranormal professionals, the ghostly activity in the house didn't stop, and Elaine Marcado put her haunted house on the market.

Upon selling the home, Elaine Marcado told the new owners that the house is haunted, and even gave them a copy of the book she wrote about her paranormal experiences in the home, but the new homeowners still move forward with the purchase.

The new owners of the haunted house on 9th Street say they still have not seen any ghosts, nor have they experienced any paranormal activity in the home. "After we moved in, I remember hearing a bunch of footsteps upstairs and getting scared, but then I remembered I had four kids in the house,” said the current homeowner, who declined to give her name. “We renovated the house after moving in, and that must have made the ghosts leave.”

Elaine said she understands some people might find her ghost story hard to believe, but what she experienced in the house was terrifying, and is absolutely true.“If someone were telling me these stories without having experienced what I’ve experienced, I’d probably say the same thing,” said Mercado. “It’s okay if you don’t believe.”  To this day, Elaine Mercado sometimes drives by the 9th Street house, and she wonders if the ghosts that scared her out still exist..

J.S.W.

What a strong name! No wonder you are not afraid. My two cents on why some of us can see spirit is that we have many undiscovered parts of our brains. Some of us are wired differently. Through genetics, and or enviornmental, and or nature. Mine happens to be genetic, enviornment ,and nature. The genetic is obvious, dieing and coming back to life is due to my enviornment at one time, and nature for me it was Mt. St. Helens ect...

Why do some of us see a ghost? I read that science thinks maybe the human ability to see in color may be as new as 2,000 years because some ancient Greek writings describe looking at things with no refrences made to their color.

Elderly townsfolk here warned me not to buy my house because it was "Haunted"! My thinking about such things was very limited and uniformed 25 years ago, I had almost no opinion... then highly coincidental things began happening, then I heard and saw things happen , all normal and explainable as a friend or relative just entering my house.. until just a pair of black jeans walked into the room-no upper body-no feet, took two steps and vanished!

I had heard the south door open (it has a closer on it it does not blow open in any wind) I heard footsteps coming across the adjacent room (Hardwood floor), headed my way, I saw and heard the door between the rooms open (it used to drag abit) looking through the sheer curtain hanging from the ceiling at the edge of the door) I saw the silouette of someone entering the room, then just two steps made by a pair of black jeans! All of this happened by the light of the television set as I had been" playing" , putting video tapes in the machine, it was Winter , about 10:30 at night . I was left much more curious than scared.

Sometimes it depends on who is living in the house. I believe some of us have differently "wired" brains if you will, just enough to perceive a different frequency, of light or sound ect. We know it's a fact animals can smell things that do exist but that we cann't smell ourselves. We also know for a fact that animals can hear sounds and frequencies that our ears/brains cannot, yet they exist. Animals can also see when we humans cannot. I suspect that ghosts exist in a different frequency/frequencies in light, sound, ect. (that we cannot perceive) than we do while alive. This is would explain why many folks only catch glimpses or stray sounds of ghosts only rarely. I would not be suprised to learn someday that ghosts are literally everywhere all around us, as I believe they are.

Comment by Tina on August 16, 2012 at 10:23am I am a believer. I have lived through this as well starting from age 3 or 4 years. My sister and I also grew up in a haunted house. Comment by Angel Ann Dozier on August 16, 2012 at 2:23am

Just watched this show this evening. Awesome show! I also watched Haunted Collector and was happy to see what was done with the Ouiga board. Smacking myself in the forehead! Salt to bind it,

I have read and thoroughly enjoyed Elaine Mercado's book and her experiences ring very true. I too have experienced the weight of an invisible "someone" lying on top of me, so can relate to this horrific experience. It was made all the more terrifying by my light turning itself on and off at the time, and my bedroom door being slammed shut of its own accord. At other times, my cupboard doors would fling open by themselves, and random objects would be flung out (usually projectiles directed at me!)

Comment by Love Paranormal on August 15, 2012 at 11:01pm

I believe ghosts are real too, and I think that ALL houses are haunted, whether people believe ghosts are real or not is another story. I have lived in a haunted house before and experienced paranormal activity first hand..... from hearing their voices on some of our home videos, to seeing someone walk by at the corner of my eye when either nobody was home or everyone eas asleep, and even experienced poltergeist activity in our kitchen with the cabinets opening and shutting and stuff being thrown around. It can be a scary situation when you live in a haunted hose and I don't wish harm on anyone, but I do wish that everyone, especially skeptics, can experience paranormal activity themselves, and then let them deny that ghosts are real.

Comment by Rachel Lundenberg on August 15, 2012 at 10:55pm

love the paranormal witness show and this looks like its going to be a scary episode. I think that there's something about people acknowledging that people might think they're crazy, or not believe them, sort of adds validity to their story, so I believe Elaine, and I know that ghosts are real, and houses are haunted.

Family's Haunted House Inspires New Paranormal Activity Documentary

Family's Experience Inside A Haunted House With A Dark History Is The Inspiration of A New Paranormal Activity Themed Documentary - Haunted Society Paranormal News -  Subscribe To Our Paranormal News Feed Here

CHRISTCHURCH, NEW ZEALAND --- A family of six moved into a house with a dark history, ignoring the tragic and mysterious events that took place inside the home. Months later, the family's experience in this house is now the inspiration behind a new paranormal activity themed documentary.

In May 2010, a mother and her two daughters were found dead inside the home. Four days later, a man who was identified as the woman's husband, was found dead inside his car, parked a block away from the house. According to Christchurch authorities, the mysterious nature of the brutal crime remains unsolved.

The new homeowners moved into the house earlier this year. They were a "little nervous" when the real estate agent told them about the mysterious deaths inside the home, but they decided to move forward with the purchase anyways. Now they say "strange things" started happening from day one.

The 41-year-old father of the household, who asked to be unnamed, said he was not a strong believer in the paranormal, but strange things were happening that he just could not explain. "We're not drug-addicted hippies who hang wind chimes from the trees, we're an average, normal family. But all six of us, and even the dog, have been picking up weird things."

Despite trying to "keep the children out of it", he said his five-year-old daughter was found talking to herself in her room, and later came downstairs and said that she was talking to a "little girl".

The family heard furniture moving in the lounge nearly every night, experienced "horrible sulfur smells that burned your eyes", witnessed light bulbs blow continually throughout the house, and their dog is often seen growling at nothing.

They first believed that their "minds were playing tricks on us", but now they believe their house is haunted. The family didn't want to move out, but they didn't know what to do, so they called in Christchurch Paranormal Investigators, and they had the house "cleansed" by a priest.

Anton Heyrick, lead paranormal investigator for Christchurch Paranormal Investigators, sent the family away for a weekend to investigate the house. The ghost hunting team set up video cameras and voice recorders in every room, and brought in thermal and infra-red cameras and other paranormal investigation equipment. "We are 95 per cent sure there is paranormal activity here - that means we can't explain the things that are happening or what we are hearing."

After a "full paranormal investigation" of the house, Anton Heyrick said he found "compelling evidence of paranormal activity". The ghost hunting group filmed their entire investigation, and Anton Heyrick plans on making a documentary using the investigation footage, on-camera interviews with the family, and further filming inside the haunted house.

New Zealand Skeptics spokeswoman, Vicki Hyde, is concerned that the documentary might resemble a "B-grade special effects horror movie", but said that she's interested in seeing the documentary.

"There have been so many ghost investigations, none of which have ever come up with anything." Vicki Hyde said. "We should be treating these things as light entertainment, but the problem is people can be vulnerable to ghost stories." Vicki Hyde also raised concern that the documentary would exploit the family.

The father conceded light bulbs blowing might be faulty wiring, the sulfur smells could be from a burst pipe, and his five-year-old daughter might have a "wild imagination", but said he was not trying to "convert" anyone into believing in ghosts, or that there is in face paranormal activity in their home.

"The house may or may not have electrical issues, and people are going to believe what they want to. But if there is such a thing as spirits, and they happen to be here, then that's fine. We're happy for them to open wardrobe doors and run up and down the stairs - we just don't want it turning malicious. To be honest, I've started to get used to it."

Anton Heyrick said he plans to release the Christchurch haunted house documentary sometime next year.

I look forward to the documentary also.  And I also wondered if this was the actual house?  It does look like something out of a Hollywood movie.  As a paranormal investigator, you have to be your biggest skeptic.  I am.  Investigate, try to recreate, interrogate, do your best to rule out any normal reasons for the activity and document your findings.  Don't accept anything at face value.  I believe the reason that paranormal activity isn't taken seriously is because we aren't doing these things.  Good documentaries will help. Good hunting!

I guess it would boil downto the money part if someone is making a profit on my tragedy I should recieve something from it--if they get $50,000 and I'm left with ghost in my house what does that say???

Twist loveThose houses great History and mystery and polterqeists .I will be doing a invsetigation like that .believe in that. But always have a open mind. Then you are doing a investigation. And be careful . bad Energy or good....Twist

Comment by Franklin Clayton Townsend on September 8, 2012 at 10:12am

Any open mind required pertentant facts, not just an unproven science by which suspicions are declared fact. I do believe in the supernatural, and ghosts.. however, just because a mouse may live in a cookie jar, this does not make it a cookie. Finding out the truth, and the hidden layers of mystery are all the fun this is about. Accepting anything blindly just because someone says so robs any who may wish to push those boundaries of the fun and knowledge that could be had in their exploration. If it is real, then it can withstand questioning, can it not? I don't doubt anyplace can be haunted, but believe it or not, the haunted houses I have been to look just like anyone else's house... with the sun shining and everything. (this was my point)

About the earthquakes... what is the quartz ratio of the layers or rock beneath, or the magnetic fields of the area pre-earthquake and post earthquke? These influences also affect certain unexplained phenomenon. They can influence or enhance such experiences. If you have any of that info, it would be nice to read.

I wonder why there is no mention of paranormal activity in Japan, after the flood, earthquake and nuclear contamination?

Comment by Anton Heyrick on September 3, 2012 at 6:31am

Anton Heyrick from CPINZ here, thank you all for your support, this article was not what we expected support wise but it shows the lack of open minds in our country and media. www.facebook.com/cpinz is our facebook, we would love to have you all over to join in the work we are doing. After the massive 2 years of earth quakes the city is a hot bed for all things paranormal. Follow us and keep in touch for the release of the documentary, there is more than one and we are working hard to get them out.

Comment by Franklin Clayton Townsend on August 31, 2012 at 4:27pm

haunted houses only look like this in movies... that alone makes me suspicious.

Comment by Susan Marie Onisko on August 30, 2012 at 11:49am

I KNOW THIS IS REAL! I WAS BORN INTO THE PSYCHIC FIELD. I SEE HEAR FEEL AND SPEAK WITH THE DECEASED. I KNOW THIS EXISITS! PLEASE BE SAFE AND PROTECT YOURSELVES! YALL ARE IN MY PRAYERS!
